Biography
I began my broadcast career at BBC Radio Cleveland in Middlesbrough, where I cut my journalistic teeth reporting, producing and reading breakfast bulletins. And apart from a short spell working on the News at 10 at ITN, I stayed with the BBC for nearly 16 years, leading and managing news teams across radio, tv and online services before moving into academia.
I joined Northumbria University in 2008 as a Senior Lecturer in Journalism. Overtime a number of roles followed... Programme Leader, Programme Director and Head of Subject for Media, before becoming an Associate Head of Department for Social Sciences. With a passion for learning and teaching and delivering a quality student experience, the role of Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching followed before becoming the Head of Department for Social Sciences in September 2019.
I joined the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× in 2022 and led the diverse and vibrant Directorate of Social Sciences which is home to Criminology, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work, Counselling and Psychotherapy and Policing until February 2025. I am currently interim Associate Dean for Knowledge Exchange for the School of Health and Society.
Away from work I continue to work as a freelance journalist for Olympic Broadcasting Services and have travelled to all over the world, most recently working in Japan, China and Paris for the Olympic Channel News as a Senior Producer.
