Biography

Charlene Wilson is a Lecturer in Accounting at º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Business School. Her academic work focuses on inclusive higher education, assessment design, widening participation, and the development of applied, practice-informed learning experiences in accounting and business education.

Charlene holds an MA in Inclusive Education and is currently undertaking doctoral research focused on assessment in higher education. Her research interests examine how assessment practices can support student belonging, progression, confidence, and success, particularly for students from widening participation and non-traditional backgrounds.

Alongside her teaching in accounting, Charlene has contributed to curriculum innovation by using Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), creating opportunities for students to engage in cross-cultural, digitally enabled learning experiences. This work connects inclusive education, internationalisation, employability, and assessment design.

Charlene is also an Affiliate Member of the Centre for Sustainable Innovation, where her work supports research-informed practice, knowledge exchange, leadership development, and sustainable organisational improvement. Through her involvement in programmes such as Help to Grow: Management, she contributes to applied learning that helps business leaders translate theory into practice and create long-term value.

Charlene’s research focuses on inclusive assessment practices in higher education, with particular interest in how assessment design can support widening participation, student confidence, progression, and belonging. Her doctoral research examines assessment within higher education and considers how assessment practices can be made more equitable, transparent, and meaningful for diverse learner groups.

Her work is informed by her MA in Inclusive Education and her teaching practice within accounting and finance. She is particularly interested in the relationship between assessment, student identity, feedback, academic confidence, and progression into professional contexts.

Charlene’s research also explores the role of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) in widening access to global learning experiences. Her work in this area considers how digitally enabled, cross-cultural learning can enhance employability, intercultural awareness, and assessment engagement for students who may not otherwise access international opportunities.

Teaching

Charlene teaches within accounting, with a strong focus on inclusive, applied and practice-informed learning. Her teaching approach is shaped by her professional background, her MA in Inclusive Education, and her doctoral research into assessment.

She is particularly interested in designing learning and assessment experiences that are clear, accessible, authentic, and connected to professional practice. Her teaching supports students to develop technical accounting knowledge alongside confidence, employability, digital capability, and professional judgement.

Charlene has also contributed to curriculum innovation through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), supporting students to work across cultures, engage with international perspectives, and apply accounting and business knowledge in collaborative contexts.
