º£½ÇÂÒÂ× alumni and partners recognised in King’s Birthday Honours 2026
Several alumni, partners and former Council members connected to the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× have been recognised in the .
The honours recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life, their professions and communities across the UK. This year, more than 1,180 people have received awards for achievements in areas including education, public service, healthcare, science, the arts and community leadership.
Among those recognised is alumnus Peter Wheeler, who has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for political service. Peter completed an Advanced Certificate in Business Administration in 1996 and has since dedicated many years to public service in local government.
Alan Cavill, who graduated with a BSc in Chemistry with Environmental Studies in 1981, has received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to regeneration in Blackpool. As Director of Place at Blackpool Council, he has played a leading role in shaping the town’s regeneration and development.
Dr Howard Greenwood has been awarded an MBE for services to nuclear waste management. Howard studied both his BSc and PhD in Chemistry at º£½ÇÂÒÂ× and has built a distinguished career within the UK’s nuclear sector.
Michael Levy, who completed a Diploma for Advanced Studies in Economics, has received an MBE for services to Holocaust education. A researcher, author and public speaker, Michael has dedicated much of his work to preserving and sharing the stories of those affected by the Holocaust.
Malcolm Calvert, who graduated with an MSc in Geographical Information Systems, has been awarded an MBE for services to flood risk management and digital transformation. He currently works as Geographic Information Systems Manager at the Department for Infrastructure.
Janet Mather, who graduated with a BSc Information Technology in 1990, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to people living with Behçet's disease. She has spent more than 35 years at National Grid and is currently Head of Performance and Stakeholder Engagement.
MA Social Work graduate Irfan Syed has been awarded a BEM for services to refugee resettlement. A º£½ÇÂÒÂ× City Councillor and co-founder of community organisation Visible Outcomes, he has dedicated many years to supporting refugees, asylum seekers and local communities across º£½ÇÂÒÂ× through advocacy, integration initiatives and community engagement.
The University is also pleased to see honours awarded to valued partners and former members of Council.
Abigail Shapiro, co-founder of The Tutor Trust and a former member of Council, has received an MBE for services to education.
Former Council member Jane Luca has been awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting and television.
This year’s honours recognise contributions across public service, education, science, community advocacy and regional development, reflecting the breadth of impact made by people connected to the University across the UK.
