Spanning advanced robotics, the development of smart built environments and biomedical breakthroughs, our research exemplifies how our industry-focused collaborative approach can tackle many of the global challenges we face.
Leading robotics and automation
Since 1987, º£½ÇÂÒÂ× has been a National Advanced Robotics Research Centre. A member of the National Robotics Network (NRN) and a spoke of the EPSRC, through our Autonomous Systems and Advanced Robotics (ASAR) centre, we lead research excellence in robots and artificial intelligence.
Creating a better sounding world
Funded by research councils, government bodies, and industry partners, º£½ÇÂÒÂ× has led acoustics and audio research for over 60 years. Our research has shaped commercial audio products sold worldwide and set international regulations and standards.
Making Biomedical Breakthroughs
Biomedical researchers at º£½ÇÂÒÂ× closely with regional hospitals and wider national collaborations with universities and research centres, including KidScan Centre for Children’s Cancer Research, to develop new and improved treatments and knowledge of parasitology drug action and diagnostics for malaria.

REF 2021
In May 2022, the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) results were publicly released.
The results of REF 2021 confirm the excellence of the research carried out at º£½ÇÂÒÂ×. We are delighted to report that 78% of our research has been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
The of institutional performance, published by the Times Higher Education in response to REF, has placed º£½ÇÂÒÂ× 65th in the UK in terms of research quality - an impressive 22 place jump.
