Supporting a safe and inclusive university community

The �������� is committed to ensuring that colleagues and students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise safeguarding concerns, respond appropriately and contribute to a safe and inclusive environment.

Our safeguarding and Prevent training framework is designed to provide training that is proportionate to individual roles and responsibilities, ensuring that all colleagues receive appropriate training and that those with specific safeguarding responsibilities receive enhanced development and support.

Safeguarding Training Framework

The University’s safeguarding training framework sets out the training expectations for different audiences across the University.

Tier 1 Safeguarding and Prevent training for colleagues

All colleagues are required to complete the University’s mandatory Tier 1 Safeguarding and Prevent eLearning module as part of their induction and as part of the University’s refresher training programme.

The training provides a foundation understanding of:

• safeguarding responsibilities;
• recognising signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation;
• the Prevent Duty;
• creating safe and inclusive environments;
• responding to concerns and disclosures;
• reporting and referral arrangements within the University.

Tier 2 Enhanced staff training

Some roles require a more detailed understanding of safeguarding because of the nature of the responsibilities involved.

Colleagues identified through the University’s role-based training framework are required to complete Tier 2 Enhanced Safeguarding and Prevent Training.

This enhanced training covers topics such as:

• recognising and responding to complex safeguarding concerns;
• risk assessment and professional judgement;
• responding to disclosures;
• information sharing and confidentiality;
• safeguarding vulnerable adults;
• Prevent-related concerns and referral pathways;
• partnership working and case management.

All training is reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects current legislation, guidance, emerging risks and sector best practice.

Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO’s)

All DSOs:

• complete externally delivered enhanced safeguarding training;
• undertake additional development relating to safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities;
• receive regular practice, policy and legislative updates;
• participate in refresher and continuing professional development activity to maintain current knowledge and practice.

The DSO role incorporates safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities, supporting a coordinated approach to student safety, wellbeing and risk management across the University.

A directory of Designated Safeguarding Officers is available to staff via the Safeguarding Hub.

Colleagues

1. Mandatory training for all colleagues - All colleagues are required to complete the Safeguarding and Prevent module online as part of their induction. This training must be refreshed every two years. Oracle will notify you when it’s time to complete or renew your training.
2. Enhanced training for specific roles - Colleagues whose roles require a deeper understanding of safeguarding will be asked to complete an additional Safeguarding and Prevent module. This may be delivered either face-to-face or online and provides more comprehensive coverage of key topics. This enhanced training will also be made available to Student Union representatives and colleagues from our partner accommodation providers.
3. Training for designated safeguarding officers (DSOs) - All DSOs must attend an externally delivered safeguarding training session every two years.

Students

At present, all apprentices will need to complete mandatory training in Safeguarding, Prevent and British values. We recommend that all students complete this module, available through .

Ongoing development and refresher activity

Safeguarding is a rapidly evolving area of practice. Alongside mandatory training, the University provides a range of opportunities for colleagues to maintain and develop their knowledge.

This includes:

• safeguarding and Prevent refresher activity;
• thematic briefings and awareness sessions;
• practice updates;
• online safety and digital safeguarding developments;
• information-sharing guidance;
• communities of practice;
• learning from sector developments and emerging risks.

These activities support continuous learning and development to help ensure safeguarding remains embedded throughout the University community.

Students and apprentices

The University is committed to helping students understand how to keep themselves and others safe, recognise when something may be a concern, and know where to access support. The Keeping Yourself Safe training is available to all students and is strongly recommended because it provides practical guidance on recognising potential risks, reporting concerns and contributing to a safe, respectful and inclusive University community.

Apprentices are required to complete the Keeping Yourself Safe training module as part of their programme. The module is available via and covers:

• safeguarding;
• the Prevent Duty;
• fundamental British Values;
• equality, diversity and inclusion.

Wider guidance, information and support relating to student safety, wellbeing, reporting concerns and accessing specialist support services is also available through the University’s student support channels.

How to report a concern

If you are worried about a student, colleague, child, young person or adult at risk, please seek advice or report your concern through the University’s safeguarding reporting arrangements. This helps ensure concerns are considered promptly and that appropriate support or action can be put in place.
