Heba Elgamodi
School of Science, Engineering & Environment
Biography
Heba is a PhD researcher in Nanoscience and Bionanotechnology at the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×. She obtained her BSc in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Manchester Metropolitan University and subsequently worked as a Chemistry Analyst at Concept Life Sciences, developing strong analytical and laboratory expertise. She later completed an MSc at the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×, where she developed her interest in nanotechnology under the supervision of Dr Zeljka Krpetic.
Heba’s PhD research focuses on the development of nanoparticle-based antimicrobial strategies to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Her research investigates gold and cuprous oxide (Cu₂O) nanoparticles of different sizes and shapes, and their conjugation with antibiotics to enhance antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. Her work combines nanoparticle synthesis and physicochemical characterisation with microbiological testing, electron microscopy, and cell viability studies to investigate antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity.
Alongside her research, Heba holds Associate Fellowship of Advance HE and has extensive experience supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students, including final-year and master’s research projects and laboratory supervision. As a laboratory demonstrator and part time-biological sciences technician, she supports practical teaching, demonstrates laboratory techniques and equipment, and assists students in developing practical scientific skills.
Heba is also a student partner on the Royal Society of Chemistry-funded Catalysing Changes in Chemical Sciences project under the Missing Elements scheme, a collaboration between the Universities of º£½ÇÂÒÂ×, Kent, and York. The project addresses systemic racism in the chemical sciences and aims to improve progression, retention, and representation of Black and minority ethnic researchers. Her role includes student engagement and recruitment, promotion of research bursaries, and supporting the organisation and delivery of online and face-to-face events across the consortium.
Her interdisciplinary experience spans nanotechnology, pharmaceutical chemistry, antimicrobial research, laboratory education, student supervision, and equality, diversity and inclusion within the chemical sciences.
