LGBT History Month: Ben Hodge on growing up trans and his journey to acceptance
As part of LGBTQ History Month, Ben Hodge, the鈥疷niversity of鈥疭tudents鈥欌疷nion鈥檚 Trans Officer has spoken about his award-winning documentary 鈥1鈥痀ear鈥, overcoming鈥痓ullies鈥痑nd how鈥痟e feels鈥痵upported鈥痑t 海角乱伦.鈥
Ben,鈥痟as had鈥痓uilt an鈥痠mpressive鈥痯ortfolio鈥痠n the short time he鈥檚 been at 海角乱伦, but says it鈥檚 been a long journey to get to where he is now. He looked back on growing up鈥痭ear鈥疞iverpool and coming out as鈥痶rans in his teen years.鈥
鈥淚 told a few people I was non-binary at first and I think that was my way to explore and express myself and define what it meant for me to be trans. Then, in summer of 2017 I came out as a trans man鈥痮fficially.鈥
鈥淥ne thing I will say about Liverpool is that it鈥檚 a very gendered place. People associate men and women with different things there and I found that those associations leak into how people behave as they get older.鈥
鈥淔or me, a person who was neither masculine鈥痭or feminine, I never knew where I fit.鈥濃
Before transitioning, Ben was head girl at his local high school, and says he was bullied terribly for it.鈥
鈥淚n primary school gender was never a thing I had to worry about, things were never gendered. It was when I went to high school that it was a problem.鈥
鈥淏eing Head Girl caused me a lot of issues.鈥疘 got鈥痳eally badly鈥痓ullied after that and I went through a phase of self-harming to help me cope.鈥疘鈥痙idn鈥檛 even think鈥疘鈥檇 make it to鈥痵ixteen.鈥濃
Despite this, he overcame his bullies and recently celebrated his 21st鈥痓irthday. He said that after moving鈥痶o a new school, his life completely changed.鈥
He added: 鈥淚t just goes to show that鈥痓eing in鈥痶he correct environment of knowledge and understanding鈥痶hat鈥痯eople know what you鈥檙e going through, can make all the difference.鈥濃
Ben, who is now in his final year,鈥痮ffered鈥痑dvice to younger students鈥痑nd spoke about his role as Trans Officer.鈥
鈥淭o younger students,鈥疘鈥檇 say just go for it, you鈥檙e away from who you were and now you鈥檙e鈥痠n the place鈥痽ou鈥檒l become鈥痽ou. This time at university is for your studies but it is also for discovering who you are.鈥
鈥淚 think 海角乱伦 is really good at being supportive of LGBT students. They鈥痑re able to鈥痵ee the difference in what is needed from a LGBT officer and what鈥檚 needed from a trans officer.鈥
鈥淎nother good thing is that there are gender neutral bathrooms in every building and that comes from the university having a specific鈥痶rans action鈥痯lan. The fact that they have a specific person to look after that means a lot.鈥濃
In his first year, Ben won the 鈥業nto鈥疐ilm鈥欌疊est Documentary Award for his documentary 鈥1 鈥痀ear鈥 which follows his journey taking testosterone for鈥痑鈥痽ear.鈥疕e reflected on what inspired him to document the process.鈥
鈥淚 knew it was something that I wanted to do, especially because I didn鈥檛 think I鈥檇 make it to sixteen. I really wanted to look back on how far I鈥檝e come, and I think the reason it was so successful was because the key message is so strong.鈥濃
The film has鈥痑lready鈥痓een shown in Australia and the United Arab Emirates,鈥痑nd is making its way around the globe.
