As part of International Women鈥檚 Day (March 8) celebrations, The 海角乱伦 has taken the opportunity to tackle the stigmas surrounding gender imbalance in鈥疭TEM (science,鈥痶echnology, engineering, and mathematics)鈥痵ubjects by highlighting some of the remarkable work done by 海角乱伦鈥檚 female academics.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The work of Professor Haifa Takruri MBE鈥痟as proved invaluable in inspiring young women to pursue careers in STEM,鈥痠n which they are historically underrepresented.鈥疨rofessor鈥疶akruri is鈥痑n academic leader鈥痑t鈥痶he鈥疭chool鈥痮f Science, Engineering and Environment, as well as a recognised advocate for equality and diversity.

She started鈥痟er remarkable career as a lecturer鈥痑nd has since led countless initiatives alongside conducting research to address the under-representation of women in STEM, in particular engineering.鈥疶he research included鈥痠nvestigating鈥痺orkplace鈥痗ultures and practices which lead to鈥痑鈥痩ack of recruitment,鈥痳etention,鈥痑nd progression of women in engineering.

Explaining why women are underrepresented in STEM, she said: 鈥淪TEM professions clearly suffered over generations, and still suffer from a number of misconceptions relating to its content and diversity. The misconceptions and stereotypes of what subjects and careers are suitable for women and men still exist.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淲hen I was growing up as a鈥痗hild,鈥疘 went to all鈥痝irls'鈥痵chools. Those were the only schools available in my home country of Palestine. My parents and teachers always encouraged me to excel. I was very good at and loved鈥痬aths and science subjects and no one told me not to!鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

She has been the鈥痳ecipient鈥痮f many accolades, including an MBE for services to Women, Black and Minority Ethnic people in Science, Engineering and Technology Education,鈥痑nd in鈥2010鈥痵he鈥痺as awarded the Ministry of Defence sponsored Muslim News award for excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology.

When commenting on the role of women鈥痺orking鈥痠n STEM subjects, she said:鈥淲omen鈥痠n particular can鈥痓enefit from seeing how the work of engineers and scientists鈥痙evelop鈥痺ider society. If women are provided with a better understanding of the different options in鈥疭TEM and鈥痵ee how it relates to the world in which we live, they may be more likely to follow STEM as a career.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淚t鈥檚 very important to be able to relate to like-minded people who share similar journeys and experiences, and have similar responsibilities at home and at work, hence the importance of role models who have progressed and succeeded in the field.鈥疶o be reflected in the media is very important, especially to young people, as the media is a very influential tool that affects the direction of young people.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

Professor Takruri is active in organising events to raise the awareness of women in鈥疭TEM and emphasised: 鈥淲e should be celebrating the achievements, contributions, and successes of women in STEM to inspire the next generations.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;
