Expert comment: government's plans on the EU Retained Law Bill
In response to the government鈥檚 plans to replace the current 鈥榮unset鈥 clause in the EU Retained Law Bill, 海角乱伦 Business School鈥檚 HR and employment law expert, Dr Jonathan Lord, shares his thoughts:
鈥淭he Conservative government has announced it will replace the current 鈥榮unset鈥 clause in the EU Retained Law Bill, with only around 800 out of 4,800 laws being revoked/amended at the end of 2023.
鈥淭his means the mass deletion of EU laws will not go ahead as planned and provide some stability around workers鈥 rights, which were potentially going to be affected if the many laws were going to be revoked.
鈥淭his will not be the end of the saga though, as the government is expected to introduce secondary legislation which could amend or replace EU laws using a 鈥榝ast-track process鈥 that attracts less scrutiny in Parliament.
鈥淢eeting the sunset clause deadline by the end of 2023 was always going to be challenging and it seems the government has quietly acquiesced to push through the really important areas of reform required.鈥
